But What If McCain Doesn't Get
The Republican Nomination?
Well, that obviously diminishes the force of this site and of the petition somewhat, but not enough for smart Democrats to ignore. If Hillary Clinton wins the Democratic Nomination, and McCain doesn't get the Republican nomination, there will still be a lot of time between then and Election Day for the Clintons to suffer the after-effects of all their negative campaigning. Some folks might have become so alienated during the Democratic primaries that they're never coming back. They might rather write in another person or just sit the election out. Other folks might just go looking for the good in whomever is nominated on the Republican side a little bit harder. And still others might be able to bring themselves to vote for Hillary, but only by holding their nose and not going out of their way in any way to support her.
Conclusion - even if McCain loses and this petition loses some of its edge, the essence of its meaning is still preserved. It will be a standing reminder that Hillary put off a lot of people. And she will have to work very hard, to say the least, during her campaign to win back the ones she hasn't irrevocably alienated.
So my position is: let's avoid all of that by applying pressure now and getting Obama nominated. Then, we won't have to worry about any of this stuff, save for the scars the Clintons will have left behind. The sooner we knock her out of contention, the better. Let the Republicans have their brokered convention. Let that be our entertainment, not how we fall all over ourselves during ours.
